Silver Cord Award
|
The Silver Cord Award is a distinguished volunteer service award available to Ankeny High School students who earn a minimum 40 hours of community service/volunteering during every year of high school, for a minimum total of 120 hours, beginning with the class of 2012. In order to earn a Silver Cord, the class of 2010 will have completed 40 hours of service; the class of 2011 will have completed 80 hours of service; and the class of 2012 will have completed 120 hours of service.
Students must earn a minimum of 40 hours each year - it would not qualify to earn 10 hours one year and 70 hours the next. (Special consideration will be given to students who move in late in their high school career.) The forty hours earned must also come from at least three different service sites. At Ankeny’s award night in May, recipients will receive a Silver Cord to wear on their robes at graduation in recognition of their achievement.

Program Forms:
|
- Pre-Approval: Pre-Approval Forms are available at right, above, and should be submitted a minimum of a week in advance of the service project date. This prevents any misunderstanding of qualifying hours.
- Documentation: Students MUST document all service activities on the Silver Cord Award Form provided at right – one form for each site or project, signed by a supervisor at the site. Time for breaks, lunch, or travel is not included. Forms should be submitted to the Community Service Coordinator in the Guidance Counseling Office at Ankeny on the first day of each month for ongoing activities and within 30 days of the completion of other activities. Seniors must submit all Silver Cord forms/documentation by May 1st of their senior year. The Community Service Coordinator will keep students’ Silver Cord files and will submit them to the appropriate counselor for final award review by May 1st of the student’s senior year.
- Summer Service: Service hours earned during the summer after the academic year may be applied toward EITHER the prior or following school year. (For example, the summer after sophomore year can apply toward either the sophomore or junior 40 hour requirement.) Summer hours earned prior to sophomore year do not count, as the program does not begin until school starts sophomore year. Blank Silver Cord Award forms are available for documenting summer service at right. Students should keep completed forms until they return to Ankeny High School in the fall. Documentation of Summer hours is due to the Community Service Coordinator in the Guidance Office by September 1st.
- Acceptable Service Activities: Silver Cord hours must be for providing a service or meeting a clear need for an agency, church, school, park, charity program or fundraiser, or community event. The service should be “above and beyond” one’s usual scope of involvement.
Silver Cord Hours CANNOT be Earned:
- To satisfy a class or requirement/obligation/committement for any agency, program or organization of which you are a member
- For a relative
- For pay or compensation of any kind
- Examples of activities that would not be acceptable:
- Sports team managing or training/rehearsing
Service work for a group as part of your membership obligation.
- Camp counselors may receive 8 hours per day for service.
